Newgate Motor Company was established by Gerry O’Connor and Jim Ring and incorporated in September 1990. We have represented the Mercedes- Benz passenger car and commercial vehicle brand since the 1st of May 1991 and the Landrover brand since April 1995. January 2009 saw our range grow extensively with both the Honda and Mazda brands coming on board.
Our modern showrooms and after sales facility stand on the site of, what was formerly Collins Joinery. Prior to the existence of any commercial enterprise on this site it was divided by the Navan to Oldcastle rail line. This rail line was closed down in the 1950s. The name “Newgate” is actually a nickname given to the locality, which is officially known as “Whistlemount”.
During the time of the railway a level crossing operated were the railway line crossed over the Bohermeen road. The story goes, that the railway crossing gates were regularly demolished by the passing train due to a lack of attention on the part of the railway crossing attendant. As a result many new sets of gates were required at the crossing. Because of this regular occurrence the area eventually became affectionately known as “Newgate”.
