When the original CLS-Class launched in 2005, it was critically acclaimed by industry experts, journalists and motorists alike. Its unique fusion of dynamic coupé styling with four-door practicality, luxury and space broke new ground in automotive design.
The all-new CLS-Class follows in its predecessor’s pioneering footsteps, yet creates an identity entirely of its own. A triumph of bold, innovative styling, it is the first
Mercedes-Benz model to showcase the distinctive new design language developed by Design Chief, Professor Gorden Wagener.
This new design idiom is apparent in every surface and detail of the new CLS-Class – from the eye-catching air inlets to the flared wheel arches. The striking radiator grille, which echoes the new SLS AMG supercar, is a defining feature, as are the frameless side windows. Full LED headlamps with dynamic functionality will also be available – another world first from Mercedes-Benz.

Driving Dynamics With its stunning exterior styling, you’d expect the new CLS-Class to deliver an exceptional driving experience – and it doesn’t disappoint. What’s more, it does so with minimal environmental impact, thanks to a range of new BlueEFFICIENCY engines.
The popular CLS 350 CDI, for example, has been BlueEFFICIENCY-optimised to significantly enhance its performance. Power output has increased from 224 hp to 265 hp (164 to 194 kW) and torque has improved by 80 Nm to 620 Nm, yet CO2 emissions start from just 160 g/km – a 21 per cent reduction. Other new engines will include the CLS 250 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY - the first 4-cylinder unit to grace the
CLS-Class line-up – which achieves up to 54.5 mpg with CO2 emissions as low as 135 g/km.
Even the formidable CLS 500 has had the BlueEFFICIENCY treatment. Despite this new V8 twin turbo engine offering 5 per cent more power and 13 per cent more torque, its CO2 emissions have been reduced by 24 per cent to 210 g/km.
All of these superb new engines are complemented by an improved 7G-Tronic Plus automatic transmission and Direct Control suspension with selective damping, resulting in impeccable ride quality. In addition, hydraulic steering has been replaced by new electro mechanic steering, providing even more assured, agile handling across the entire speed range. |
Comfort The original CLS-Class set the highest standards of luxury, quality and craftsmanship – and the new CLS-Class continues this proud tradition.
Maintaining the pioneering four-seat coupé layout, the beautifully designed cabin uses the finest materials and finishes to create a sense of refined, understated elegance. From distinctive Aubergine leather upholstery to opulent Burr Walnut trim, there’s an array of opportunities to personalise the interior to suit your tastes. What’s more, thanks to the new vehicle’s larger dimensions, there’s even more interior space for occupants and their luggage.
An array of stylish details ranges from extra trim elements on the door, to the new colour instrument cluster. Options vary from the Luxury Package – complete with Passion leather upholstery and electric glass sunroof – to Ambient interior lighting, which uses low-level coloured lighting to create a calm and relaxing in-cabin atmosphere.
For convenience, gearshift paddles and the Direct Select gearshift lever are standard while Active Parking Assist helps make light work of parking. The system not only identifies appropriately sized spaces but also guides the vehicle in – drivers simply operate the accelerator and brake. |
Technology The new CLS-Class showcases many of the latest Mercedes-Benz innovations, including availability of full LED headlights. The new headlights incorporate 71 individual LED lights that create a stunning visual impact. What’s more, the light produced by LED is closer to natural daylight, so it puts less strain on drivers’ eyes.
For optimum safety, the LED headamps incorporate the full Intelligent Light System with new Intelligent Headlight Control (IHC). This advanced new system offers significant improvements to field of vision, with the low beam’s range increased by up to 300 metres. Active Light Function follows the steering angle to enhance illumination by up to 90 per cent, while cornering light function improves visibility at junctions.
Other innovative technologies include electro mechanic steering that is even more precise and responsive than the previous model’s hydraulic set-up. And an array of BlueEFFICIENCY measures such as ECO Start/Stop(excluding CLS 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY) that significantly reduces the vehicle’s CO2 emissions and fuel consumption. |
Safety The new CLS-Class incorporates an array of advanced technologies to minimise the risk of accidents and injuries.
Standard features include Attention Assist, which continuously monitors your driving behaviour for signs of fatigue and issues a warning if required. Adaptive Braking and Hold function, which uses brake-drying and priming functions to ensure maximum braking power is available when you need it most.
It’s also reassuring to know that the new CLS-Class boasts extensive protective measures such as new pelvis airbags and driver’s knee bag. Even the new-look front section is designed to minimise the risk to pedestrians in the event of an impact.
For added peace of mind, options include the Driving Assistance Package, comprising of Active Lane-Keeping Assist, Active Blind Spot Assist and Distronic Plus. Optional Speed Limit Assist Plus, Night View Assist Plus and Reversing camera can also be specified. |
